Veganuary - what is it and how to get involved

Happy 2022! New year means new resolutions. Whether you’re looking for a health kick or to simply try something new, Veganuary could be it! So where did it start and what is it?

Forged on a kitchen table in York by a husband-and-wife team, Veganuary has made newspaper and TV headlines around the world – from the front page of the Times and New Scientist to features in the Washington Post, New York Times and South China Morning Post.

The organisation now has campaign hubs in seven countries – UK, US, Germany, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and India – and has welcomed participants from every country in the world except North Korea and Vatican City. For some the experience was life-changing – including a Devon woman who lost seven stone and went from couch potato to triathlete; a 70-year-old in California who’s lowered her blood pressure, cholesterol and no longer registers as pre-diabetic; and a woman in Eswatini who’s started her own vegan mail order company to help other people take on the challenge as well.

As of the 5th January, 2022 – Veganuary, the global pledge to try vegan for 31 days, celebrated a huge milestone – a total of two million people have officially signed up since the pledge began in 2014.

Not only that, but being vegan has a massive impact on our planet. Veganuary’s Head of Communications, Toni Vernelli, says: “Climate change is at the forefront of everyone’s mind and one key solution is at everyone’s finger-tips – their fork. Changing our diets is crucial to cutting greenhouse gas emissions.”

A recent survey* found that six months after completing their one-month Veganuary challenge, 82% of those participants who were not vegan when they signed-up had maintained a dramatic reduction in their animal product consumption. 30% were still eating a fully vegan diet, 38% were eating at least 75% less meat and other animal products than pre-Veganuary and 14% were eating at least 50% less.
